Psycho Mantis reading the player's Memory Card :

A guide of Konami games detected by the game, and the specific comments they activate.

MGS 1, original JPN-version

MGS 1 Integral

You know, something I really love in MGS 1 is the Psycho Mantis fight, and more specifically how he can detect saves of Konami games in your Memory Cards.

But no matter how hard I search on the web, it seems there wasn't a lot of research on exactly which games trigger all of his specific lines... So I went and did experiments with all of the Konami games I own.

First of all,
PLEASE NOTE THIS EXPERIMENT WAS MADE ON THE JAPANESE VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL MGS 1, on PS1. The other versions of MGS have a different set of games Mantis can detect.

For the Japanese-only Integral version list, click HERE.

I do own the French version of MGS 1 as well, but I only own a whooping three PAL Konami games: Lethal Enforcers, Ronin Blade, and Silent Hill. I thus hardly can do anything with that for that version.
As for the U.S. version, I don't own it (and I don't own any U.S. Konami games either), sorry.

You'll also note I'm far from owning all Japanese Konami games released on PS1. As such, my guide is incomplete: it lacks several Mantis comments, such as the ones on Action, RPG, and Sports games. If you own the original Japanese version of MGS, and JPN-Konami games not listed in the guide, and are interested in contributing to the guide, please don't hesitate contacting me with a PM at my Youtube account, or at TV Tropes.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Without further addo, the guide.

Here are the Konami games I used in the experiment:

* Dance Dance Revolution (1st game)
* Detana Twinbee Yahoo Deluxe Pack
* Gradius Gaiden
* Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius
* Lightning Legend: Daigo no Daibouken
* Mitsumete Knight
* Mitsumete Knight R: Daibouken Hen
* Policenauts
* Policenauts Private Collection
* Snatcher
* Susume Taisen Puzzle Dama
* Tokimeki Memorial: Forever With You
* Tokimeki Memorial Taisen Puzzle Dama
* Tokimeki Memorial Taisen Tokkae Dama
* Tokimeki Memorial Private Collection
* Tokimeki Memorial Selection: Fujisaki Shiori
* Tokimeki Memorial Drama Series Vol. 1: Nijiiro no Seishun
* Tokimeki Memorial Drama Series Vol. 2: Irodori no Love Song
* Tokimeki Memorial Drama Series Vol. 3: Tabidachi no Uta
* Tokimeki Memorial 2
* Tokimeki Memorial 2 Substories Vol. 1: Dancing Summer Vacation
* Tokimeki Memorial 2 Substories Vol. 2: Leaping School Festival
* Tokimeki Memorial 2 Substories Vol. 3: Memories Ringing On
* Tokimeki Memorial 2 Taisen Puzzle Dama
* Tokimeki no Houkago
* Twinbee Taisen Puzzle Dama

With all of those games' saves combined in two Memory Cards (1), here are the comments Psycho Mantis gave me:

(1) Minus Policenauts Private Collection, which doesn't have a save system and thus can't have a save block to include in a Memory Card

* You seem to like Tokimemo!
* You seem to like Policenauts!
* You seem to like Kojima's works! (Kojima: Thank you for your continued support!)
* You seem to like games made by KCE Japan!
* You seem to like Adventure games!
* You seem to like Romance Simulation games!
* You seem to like Arcade games!
* You seem to like Konami games!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, starting from that, I made various experiments, by using an empty Memory Card and adding various combinations of saves. From those experiments, I deduced the following:

Here are the conditions needed to trigger each of those comments:

Mantis' comment

Conditions to trigger the comment

You seem to like Tokimemo

Due to a lack of Westerners owning, and having played Tokimeki Memorial games, there's quite a bit of misconception on how to trigger that one, thinking that you just need a save from the original Tokimeki Memorial: Forever with you (which I'll refer to "TM1" from now on for simplicity's sake) to trigger it.

Actually, you need saves of AT LEAST TWO different Tokimemo games to trigger it, and it's not needed for one of them to be one of TM1: any combination of two or more of the 8 compatible Tokimemo games will do the trick. See below for the list of those Tokimemo games.

You seem to like Policenauts

This one is easy, just have a save data of Policenauts.

You seem to like Kojima's works

To trigger it, you must have save data of both Policenauts and Snatcher.

I tried to replace one of those saves with one from Tokimemo Drama Series: Nijiiro no Seishun and Irodori no Love Song (two games Kojima worked on as one of the Drama directors): didn't work. Only Policenauts and Snatcher together will trigger that one comment.

You seem to like games made by KCE Japan

You need at least two games Mantis detects as made by KCE Japan to trigger this comment. See the next chart below for a list of those games.

You seem to like Adventure games

You need at least two games Mantis detects as being of the Adventure genre to trigger this comment. See the next chart below for a list of those games.

You seem to like Romance Simulation games

You need at least two games Mantis detects as being of the Romance Simulation genre to trigger this comment. See the next chart below for a list of those games.

You seem to like Arcade games

You need at least two games Mantis detects as being of the Arcade genre to trigger this comment. See the next chart below for a list of those games.

You seem to like Konami games

You need at least three games Mantis detects as being made by Konami to trigger this comment. See the next chart below for a list of those games.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few final personal comments on that experiment:

* After further research on the Japanese web and personal experience from the various Konami games I own, it looks like there is no "You seem to like Shooting games" and "You seem to like Puzzle games" lines: Shooting Games and Puzzle Games were apparently lumped into the general "Arcade Game" genre.

* However, I'm surprised Twinbee Taisen Puzzle Dama and Tokimeki Memorial Tokkae Dama aren't detected as "Arcade games", like Tokimeki Memorial Taisen Puzzle Dama and Susume Taisen Puzzle Dama are; same for Detana!! Twinbee Yahoo! Deluxe Pack, not counted as an Arcade Game, while Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius and Gradius Gaiden are.

* I know Mantis has comments for Action, RPG, and Sports games genres as well, but unfortunately I don't own games that would allow me to trigger those comments, such as Castlevania, Suikoden, Twinbee RPG, and Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu. T_T

Hope you enjoyed the guide!
